NIC Rhinos record appearance-maker Michelle Magee returns for 2027
NIC Rhinos Netball are delighted to announce the return of Michelle Magee ahead of the 2027 Netball Super League season (NSL)
A familiar face to Rhinos supporters, Michelle Magee returns to the club where her NSL journey began, bringing with her extensive league experience, international pedigree and immense leadership qualities.
Magee was part of the Rhinos’ inaugural NSL squad in 2021 after initially joining the club as a training partner. Through hard work, she established herself as a key member of the team, becoming the first player in Rhinos Netball history to reach 50 appearances during her four seasons in Yorkshire.
After making the move to Birmingham Panthers for the 2025 season, Magee continued to demonstrate her defensive expertise. Over her two years in Birmingham the Northern Ireland international featured in 27 matches as she continued to provide energy and defensive pressure across the court.
Playing at Wing Defence and Goal Defence, Magee’s athleticism, reading of the game and relentless work rate make her a valuable addition to the Rhinos’ defence.
Away from the NSL, Magee has enjoyed an outstanding international career with Northern Ireland. Making her senior debut as a 17-year-old, she represented her country at the Commonwealth Games aged just 18 and was named Northern Ireland Player of the Year in 2023. Most recently she captained the Northern Irish team at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Speaking on returning to the club, Magee said: "I just feel so happy and grateful for the opportunity to come home! I know the up-hill climb we need to go on to grow our new team, but I’ve just spent the last few weeks feeling so much excitement and gratitude. It’s hard to put into words what the last few years have taught me. But ultimately what I want to bring to Rhinos is my love for this game and for my club!
Speaking on joining her partner Rhea Dixon at the Rhinos: "It’s so special! Rhea & I played alongside each other during the first two years of our relationship. Rhinos have always been so supportive of us and continue to be. I’ve missed being on her team, she’s invaluable on and off court."
"Lauren’s belief in me, and the opportunity to play back in the circle. I’m so excited to be on the same team as the other 9 players we’ve signed, I’ve played with lots of them before and already know we have what it takes to build something special and be a proud crash of Rhinos."
Her final message to the loyal Rhinos fans: "I’d say ‘We’re All Leeds Aren’t We?"
Lauren Palmer added: “Defensively, Shelly brings something that we really wanted to add to the group. Her ability to match up one-on-one, tag players and really work hard against her opponent is a massive strength. We needed someone with that experience and defensive mindset in our group, and Shelly fits that perfectly.
“She’s really well thought of here and knows what it means to be a Rhino. I’m really excited to have her back in the environment and to see her bring everything she’s learned since leaving the group. Her experience, leadership and understanding of the club will be a really positive addition to what we’re building.”
Everyone at NIC Rhinos Netball is thrilled to welcome Rhinos icon Shelly Magee back to the club and looks forward to seeing her continue her journey during the 2027 season.
