Rhinos sign goal shooting Superstar Mvula
Goal shooting superstar Joyce Mvula will return to Netball Super League in 2024 with Leeds Rhinos Netball. The Malawian player returns to the competition she won in 2022 with Manchester Thunder after a year in New Zealand with Central Pulse.
During her six years at Thunder, she established herself as one of the competition's best and most consistent shooters.
In 2019 she helped Manchester win the title, playing alongside current Rhinos coach Liana Leota. In her last three years in Super League she achieved a 91 per cent success shooting rate. She scored an incredible 699 goals in 2021 to see her team through to the semi-finals and the following year topped this with 774 goals in Thunders’ Championship winning campaign.
She made her international debut in 2010 and this year she played in her fourth World Cup for this year, where she was one of the stand out performers in the competition, having previously shone in 2014 tournament with 216 goals.
Speaking about joining the Rhinos, Mvula said: “I am excited to be heading back to the Netball Super League and am looking forward to meeting up with my new team. I have played with Liana before at Manchester Thunder so it will be good to team up with her again.
“The competition is one that I really enjoy playing in and I can’t wait to get back started and get building new connections with my team.”
Leeds Rhinos Director of Netball, Liana Leota said: “I am very grateful that Joyce has signed for Leeds Rhinos in 2024. I think she was a standout at the World Cup for the Malawi Queens. She is a high-percentage, high volume shooter. She is that target shooter at the back that feeders and anyone in her team is confident that if that ball goes into her she’s going to grab that ball with two hands and take it as strong as she can. She has a presence in the back and everyone knows what you are going to get from her and is definitely a threat in that circle and will be hard to stop because of her physical presence as well.
