Scottish Thistle MacPhail makes switch to Rhinos
Leeds Rhinos Netball have added to their defence options for 2024 with the signing of Scotland international Sarah MacPhail from Severn Stars.
The 26-year-old from Kirkwall was part of the Strathclyde Sirens squad for three seasons, making her Super League debut in 2021. Last year she signed for Severn Stars where she played 16 times in Netball Super League. Internationally she has represented Scotland from aged 15 and played in the 2019 World Cup and made her Commonwealth Games debut in 2022. Alongside her netball career, MacPhail works as an optometrist.
Speaking about her move to the Rhinos MacPhail said: “When I got the call from Liana I was ecstatic. I am so excited to be coached by her and to get to know the team. I am somebody who thrives in a happy, team environment and I think the group of girls we have are going to give that.
“I think there is so much to learn from different coaches and teammates. We have a balance of people in the squad who have lots of experience alongside youth and I think that is a good mix. I was pleased with my season last year so want to build on that with my new team.”
Leeds Rhinos Director of Netball, Liana Leota said: “Sarah offers height and range in that wing and goal defence position. She has the ability to work hard and consistently. I thought she played outstandingly at Stars when she was there and for me, she can cover both those positions and there is potential to put her into centre as well.
“I am excited to work with her, she has a mature attitude, I have had some great conversations with her and I am looking forward to seeing what she can do in Blue and Amber next season.”
