Leeds Rhinos Netball bounced kept their play-off ambitions alive with a 49-39 win over Surrey Storm at the Copper Box Arena.
Dan Ryan's team bounced back from their defeat against Loughborough Lightning a day earlier to make sure they were still in the mix for a top four spot. Fi Toner missed out on the team after picking up an ankle injury in the previous game so Emily Hollingworth returned to the starting line up at wing defence and was named the Age Partnership Player of the Match for her performance. Storm were without their Goal Keeper Alima Priest who had also sustained an injury the previous day.
The last time these two teams met the Rhinos had earned a six point victory and the opening quarter in this fixture suggested it would be another fierce contest. Donnell Wallam was in top form in a physical fast paced first quarter, which saw Leeds edge in front to 11-10.
In the second quarter the Rhinos took command and 15 goals from Wallam and two more from Dixon gave them a 17 goal lead, but it wasn't just attack that Leeds looked in control. The hard work from Vitality Roses player Vicki Oyesola proved crucial for her team, coming up with a chain of interceptions and quick transitions to convert at the opposite end.
The third quarter Storm matched the Rhinos goal for goal, with the introduction of Emma Magee having a big impact on her side, but once again the variety of feeds into the circle helped Leeds find a way around the Storm defence and Wallam added a further 12 goals to keep her team in front.
Storm battled hard throughout the final quarter but the momentum was in favour of Leeds as they began to close out the game. Although Storm outscored Leeds by one goal for the first time in the game, for the large part they were able to sustain the pressure and with six goals from Wallam and a further three from Dixon they did enough to hold out for the win.
